The difference is that you're close to but removed from the hustle and bustle of Cancun. In the middle of the Riviera Maya is the lesser known town of Playa del Carmen. Playa del Carmen is where you can take the Cozumel ferry and also stroll the cobblestone streets of 5th Avenue and enjoy the shops, restaurants and bars. Cancun is the big city and Playa del Carmen is the small town sister.
The Riviera Maya stretch of 81 miles down the Caribbean coast of Mexico begins 11 miles south of the Cancun International airport in Puerto Morelos and extends all the way down to the small town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a small town near the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. The areas between include the Riviera Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum.
The area features uncrowded white sand beaches, over 100 Cenotes (natural wells), and is close to many of Mexico's most significant Mayan archeological sites. You can enjoy the action of kayaking, mountain biking, scuba diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, bird watching, and all your favorite leisurely beach pursuits.
